CONNECTIONS FOR ABUSED WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN (CAWC) RAISES nearly $200,000 AT ITS 2014 BENEFIT GALA SOUNDS OF SILENCE
On March 8, 2014 Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC), one of Chicago’s oldest and largest domestic violence agencies, held its 29th Annual Spring Gala Sounds of Silence in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Chicago (151 E. Wacker Dr.) CAWC created Sounds of Silence to give recognition and a voice to the too often “silent” crime of violence between individuals and within families.
Equity Residential served as the exclusive presenting sponsor for this black tie optional event, which featured a cocktail hour with silent auction and mystery wine raffle, followed by a seated dinner, live auction and dancing. Almost 300 individuals attended this energizing evening that included music by Style Matters DJ.
This year, CAWC presented its Champion Award to DLA Piper LLP (US) for its extraordinary leadership in support of CAWC’s mission to end domestic violence. Cheryl Kozak and Deanne Van Natta accepted the award on behalf of the firm and shared how strongly they believe in the work of CAWC. In 2013 DLA Piper played an instrumental role in the upgrading of the kitchen at CAWC’s confidential shelter.
During a video presentation, three of CAWC’s supporters shared how their lives have been impacted by domestic violence. This video also served as a reminder that domestic violence does not discriminate. Each year one in four women, from various backgrounds, are impacted by domestic violence and left with the difficult challenge of attempting to cope with the effects that the abuse has left on them and their families.
In its 37 years of existence, CAWC has employed a self-help, empowerment approach to help women rebuild their lives and renew their sense of hope for a life free from violence. Founded by four Chicago women concerned about domestic violence, CAWC has a long commitment to serving the women and children of Chicago. Proceeds from this event will go towards supporting CAWC’s four program areas: Greenhouse Shelter, Hospital Crisis Intervention Project, Humboldt Park Outreach Program and Domestic Violence Services at Haymarket Center.
